Critical Thinking or Unbelief?

I saw a video clip of Bill Johnson this morning on Facebook that caused me to stop and think.

Everything (in heaven) is built upon absolute, rock solid faith. This world, on the other hand, is filled, riddled with unbelief. Unbelief even as a virtue. It’s called critical thinking. And you and I will always reflect the nature of the world we’re most aware of. We will carry the fragrance of the world we’re most aware of. Why do you think Peter’s shadow healed people? There’s no substance to a shadow. Your shadow will always release whatever overshadows you.

I’ve often wondered about the virtue of critical thinking. For years, I prided myself in my ability to think critically about certain subjects. I criticized others who were more naive or accepting of hearsay. It was so easy to do.

Should We Just Believe EVERTHING?

Most of my childhood friends grew up to be unquestioningly conservative Republicans. They believed the conservative (but not the liberal!) President was on a mission from God and they stood by him until the end. They turn a blind eye to the flaws of their chosen system and focus only upon the strengths.

Or the people who receive a chain email and instantly believe the government is conspiring against them and their conservative morals. I don’t discount the existence of conspiracy. I merely cannot give consent and belief to any and every story out there. There has to be SOME sort of qualifying process by which we accept information presented as true.

This I have always referred to as critical thinking.

Let’s Not Get Carried Away Just Yet

I don’t think Bill Johnson is recommending we throw all caution to the wind and accept whatever is said. Obviously, someone who despises his ministry will take this quote as evidence that he wants his audience to accept everything he says regardless of how bizarre because to think critically would be to “live in unbelief.” Poppycock.

There is a spiritual discernment that supercedes man’s natural common sense. When God speaks, the human spirit has the capacity to recognize truth. The Bible is filled with situations where conventional wisdom was overthrown and only the person with spiritual discernment or an obedient heart would discover the joys of veering off the well-trodden path.

Look at Abraham, walking his son up the mountain to be sacrificed. Look at Moses, leading his people to a dead end with Pharoah’s men in hot pursuit. Look at Namaan, taking a bath in a river to be healed of leprosy. Look at Joshua, shouting at the greatest walled city he’d ever seen in order to conquer it. Or Gideon. Or David. Or Jesus born in abject poverty to an unwed mother. Or Gentiles speaking in tongues.

Conventional wisdom and critical thinking would have landed the people in a heap of trouble, causing them to miss out on God’s plans and purposes, His deliverance and His provision.

When truth is spoken, it has a ring of authenticity to it. It’s powerful. The word of God is sharper than a two-edged sword.

And so we do NOT promote a mentality of unregulated acceptance. Neither do we promote a purely logical observation of information for the purposes of verifying repeatable scientific results. In other words, there’s a very non-scientific part of us humans that RECOGNIZES God’s truth. Or it was built to. The condition of our hearts plays a role in our ability to hear clearly. When God spoke audibly to Jesus, some said they heard thunder. Some, an angel.

The question is: Are you allowing your spiritual discernment to rule over your logic?
